FROM
25 May 2004
I'm Phyllis Joyce Brooks Rowland, daughter of Albert Lee Brooks and Annie Lou Lindsey Brooks, sister of Wanda B. Stanley, wife of Hughey Edward (Ed) Rowland, mother of Edward Brooks Rowland and Richard Lindsey Rowland, grandmother of Katherine Elizabeth (Katie) and Carson Lee (children of Eddie and Kathy Vullo Rowland and Emily Brooke daughter of Rich and Andrea Lambert Rowland.
I was born May 6, 1939 in Edison, Ga. across street from Ma Ma and Pa Pa in the Will Davis house and delivered by Dr. Hattaway. I'm glad mother stuck to her decision in naming me, not being swayed by Aunt Lizzie who thought for sure my name would be Alberta. Being the first grandchild provided me lots of attention
and spoiling.
My first memories (hopefully correct) were living in house between Mrs. Frith, Louise Howell and Lila & Thomas Blackshear. It consisted of 2 bedrooms, kitchen, bath, living room and a big playroom with lots of toys. I remember mother taking me to school my 1st day...Rebecca Manry, teacher
We moved to country in 1946..no bath but electricity...also got block ice from ice plant.. used Theodore Strickland's phone until we got one.
Wanda was born in 1948.
My childhood was filled with dolls, riding bike, swinging, climbing trees, but my favorite was cutting out and playing paper dolls. The first flash of lightening and mother put the scissors away. Dusting and folding clothes I remember well, and of course, washing dishes. I think mother used every dish & pot we had.
Attended "picture show" every Sat. good ole' westerns.. Ma Ma told me her favorite was Gene Autry..
Moved back to town in 1950, across street from Grover Palmer. Had 2 bedrooms, bath, kitchen, living room , porches built by daddy, Uncle Bartow and Mr. Miller and ? ... had fridge, phone , city water and later paved streets.
Loved my high school years. playing basketball, tennis, swimming at Cordrays, square dancing at the Bluff, sock hops in the gym, driving the red jeep and riding Sonny, our horse. Graduated from EHS in 1957.
Graduated from Georgia Southwester College in 1959...member and officer in several clubs and Qua Delta sorority....
Moved to Macon, Ga. in 1959. Met Ed while we both worked at 1st Nat"l Bank and married it 1961. Our first son, Eddie, was born in 1962 Our second son, Rich, in 1967. Eddie graduated from U of Ga. and is in real estate in Smarr, Ga. Eddie is named after his dad and my maiden name. Rich graduated from Southwestern College in the medical field, lives in N.C. and is named after my mother's maiden name.
Ed and I moved to Franklin, N. C. (where he was born) in 1990. He retired from ITT and I retired from MPP (Head
Start division).
As written, we experience valleys so we can appreciate the mountain tops...losing my parents and grandparents was truly a low, but knowing each one of my family has accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior is the top.
Thank each of you for memories past, present and future.
Joyce
