As children, safety in small town Edison was not a concern, therefore,
there was no need to keep a close eye on us. We were allowed to ramble
up and down the block or around town at will.
Our favorite play grounds, however, were in the back yard, in the
pasture behind the house, in the gin yard (next door) or along the
railroad tracks, (100 yards behind our house). All within shouting
distance from home.
So, when Mama needed us for something, like dinner, or whatever, she
would go to the back door and call.
Well, this one time when dinner was ready, she went to the back door and
called in a loud voice,
"GORDON-N-N-N-N-N-N"
Instead of being out by the railroad tracks or in the gin
yard as she thought, I was in the back yard just around the corner of
the dining room, but out of her sight.
I answered in a soft but simulated loud voice.
"YES-S -S-S-S-S-S
!"
She again called in a loud voice,
"COME TO DINNER-R -R-R-R-R-R".
I answered back still in a soft but simulated lour voice,
"WHAT-T -T-T-T-T-T".
She came out into the back yard and called again,
"COME TO DINNER-R-R-R-R-R-R".
This went on for a couple more times before she walked
around the corner and saw me standing there snickering. She stopped with
a surprised look on her face and I could immediately tell she wasn't
impressed with my shenanigans.
"What are you doing?" she asked. I quickly told her that the devil made
me do it. But being the kind lady, gentle soul and loving mother that
she was, I escaped with just a "I should spank you" look.

Probably not to many youngsters today
know what a June Bug is, since there are not many of them around any
more. I haven't seen one in years.
June Bugs are about one inch long, green, with wings, long hind legs and
they love figs.
Why are they called JUNE BUGS??? Probably because they first show up
in the month of June when the figs begin to ripen.
There was a large fig tree in our back yard and each year it would be
full of figs. Consequently, there were a lot of June Bugs around.
One of the fun things we did was to catch a June Bug, tie a light sewing
thread to one of its hind legs and turn it loose. It would fly off and
we would run after it holding the thread. And here we would go, around
the tree, across the back yard, over the fence and wherever.
Doesn't sound like much now but it was great fun for youngsters back
then. Just another case of youthful ingenuity and having your fun where
you found it.
Now the PETA people would probably want to put you in jail for such as
that.
Incidentally, did you know that the PETA people are far more violently
opposed to fur than leather because it is much safer to spray paint the
fur coat of a little old
blue haired lady
than the leather jacket of a
motorcycle gang
bubba.
