DEATH OF A  LAD

Master Floyd Brooks, the 14 year old son of Mr. Tom Brooks, who lives a few miles west of the city, died Wednesday, February 24, of this week, after suffering for about six weeks with a complication of stomach trouble. All that loving hands and skilled physicians could do was administered to the little sufferer with the hope of restoring him to his health, but all was to no avail.

The burial took place yesterday afternoon at 3 O'clock in the cemetery at Mars Hill church, a few miles from town.

The News joins their many friends in offering sincere sympathy to the heart-broken relatives in this sad hour of intense bereavement.

Note: According to Jim Brooks (Floyd's brother), Floyd had been sick with a stomach problem for several weeks. Tom Brooks and family provided around the clock care for Floyd during his illness. Tom had Floyd to several doctors. In fact, he had one doctor from Alabama come and stay for two weeks in his house to provide medical care. Nothing helped and Floyd died from his illness. To settle the medical bills incurred, caused Tom Brooks to sell his farm and move.

Since Jim (Daddy) was born in 1887 and Floyd born in 1895, which means that Daddy was about 8 years old when Floyd was born. When Floyd died, Daddy was about 22, a couple of years later, Jim and Lonie Holloway were married.

The whole family must have gone through a very traumatic time. Most families, at that period, lost a family member but not in their middle teens. With medical attention not readily available and rather primitive by today's standards, stillborn and death in infancy was not uncommon.                        FGB
