The first temple, or chapter, was founded in 1913 by 22 progressive women with strength of purpose and vision. Since that time the membership has flourished and now numbers over 54,000 members in 149 temples throughout North America and Canada. The DAUGHTERS of the NILE is founded upon the belief in the Fatherhood of God and the Sisterhood of Women. Its most vital tenets are CHARITY, FRIENDSHIP and TRUTH. The philanthropic purpose is deeply imbedded in their history. Since receiving permission from Imperial Shrine Headquarters in 1924, Daughters of the Nile has contributed almost $30,000,000.00 for the children at Shriners Hospitals. Members share in innovative and creative fund-raising events to promote their goal of providing a better quality of life to children who are in need. Each year, through their Convalescent Endowment Fund and Convalescent Relief Fund, Daughters of the Nile contribute to the hospitals for prosthesis, orthopedic, shoes, wheelchairs, etc. for out patients. In addition, many Temples sew garments and quilts, provide toys and hold parties for the children admitted in the hospital as in-patients. A Daughters of the Nile temple consists of 4 elected positions and several appointed positions. The Leader of the temple is the "QUEEN" followed by three other elected officers in descending order. These are: Princess Royal Princess Tirzah Princess Badoura These three officers are known as "THE LINE" and each officer progresses up the line each year until the fourth year when she serves as Queen. The QUEEN selects all of the appointed officers. All other Ladies of the Household (members) are referred to as Princesses. The Jacksonville Chapter of DON, Chartered on April 17, 1948, was designated KHEM TEMPLE#85. The regular meetings are held at the Friday Musical building on Oak Street with the ceremonials and dances/balls held at the Morocco Temple (Shrines) Mosque on St. Johns Bluff Road. There are currently approximately eleven hundred (1100) members in KHEM TEMPLE. Daughters of the Nile enjoys its heritage from the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.
